...Until it is Implemented.
Hello. I am still alive. Are you?
I have not gotten to work any more on the new Scrawlpoint. I could try to blame it on a lot of different things, trying to pass the buck, but I'm not going to. The real reason I have not worked on it is because I haven't set aside the time.
I have been thinking about the new site a lot recently. In viewing and using other websites on the internet, it gives me a lot of ideas of things I'd like to see, things, I'd like to change and things I'd like to not see. These thoughts are mingling and giving me a picture of what I'd like the new Scrawlpoint to be.
Bear with me as I try to make time in the near future to get underway with some development.
I am supposed to be working on a project with some people from school - Chuck, Andy and John - that will be pretty cool once we get something up and running. I mention that because it's something that may take up some time, but I think it will be worth it, since it's still computer/web related.
Another note: I have started working my internship, and it is providing me with a lot of great experience into a multitude of things: programming, documentation, software development life cycle, and lots of other things. It is definitely helping me to see things from a different perspective and I am working with a great technology stack.
Another another note: I am working on finishing a project for a client through nullSIX. The site will be completed soon as I get some more information from the client. It's been a good experience because it's allowed me to get a feel for how long it actually takes me to design and implement something. The nullSIX business name was recently registered, which is very exciting! I think Scrawlpoint can be worked into my business model in some fashion.
Just wanted to give you this quick update. If you don't hear any word from me relating to progress soon... shout at me.
PS. The site has not been completely neglected! I recently restored the automatic email capability. Emails are once again sent out when a new account is registered or you forget/change your password.

So Charles and I have been working on the new site today, all brainstorming and designing and programming!
As you can imagine, as with any new technology there have been learning curves and snags. But tonight, we were just modding some .htaccess files, trying to configure the server to our needs.
That's when something really weird started to happen. On certain cases, the URL we were rewriting would have part of the url appended to the end. Other times it was just fine. We thought something had to be wrong with our logic, so we went back to the RewriteConds and RewriteRules we were using, trying to figure where we were going wrong.
Then we decided to try it on a different system to see if it was a configuration error... turns out, it wasn't. Chuck managed to find that the apache mod_rewrite module has a bug that was causing our distress. The bug has been in existence for a while, and we're still not quite sure why it hasn't been eradicated yet.
It's frustrating and relieving to find a bug in the software you're using. In the first place, it's not your fault... but then, you've spent all that time thinking you were wrong, trying to figure out where you've gone astray. At any rate, I'm not aware of the bug, and I know mod_rewrite (and regular expressions) much better!
Anyway, I just thought I would let you all know that we are working on the website. It's a lot to think about, a lot to interweave and a lot to do, so please bear with us. My goal is to at least have made a good start by the time Spring quarter starts.
Tomorrow we'll be at it again!

Design of the new Scrawlpoint is nearly complete. Later today Chuck and I will be sitting down to talk about the actual code side of things. By the end of the day we should have at least made a start with the programming! I am very excited and I hope you all are as well.
I have a whole slew of things in mind for the new website. I just hope there is enough time over break to implement them all!

Development of the new Scrawlpoint will begin in earnest and full within one week. My Christmas break will be used primarily for this purpose. Charles will be my cohort. I hope to re-haul every last piece of this website and improve it drastically.
Now, I am off to finish my studying for the night. I will keep you updated. I am thoroughly excited!

So as I wait for this file to upload, I shall update quickly. This week is my last week of work at Avetec. Sort of sad, yes, but school starts soon and I think that's even more sad... Alas, all good no-school times can last forever.
So this summer I've launched nullSIX and am working on a website for a client. It's exciting! I know that nullSIX isn't finished, but it's coming along and I think it looks nice right now. I'll be working more on the other website until it's finished, which hopefully won't take too much longer.
This is my last week because I move back over to Columbus on Monday! I will have all next week and half of the next before classes start again. I'm looking forward to living in Columbus, just not classes starting up again... bleh.
Since I will have all that time, I plan to work on nullSIX, clients' sites (yes, that's plural!) and also SCRAWLPOINT! That's correct, I will be working on the new version of Scrawlpoint! I've been thinking about the site more and more as of late and I'm becoming antsy.
I was thinking of implementing a feed ability before redesigning everything else but I thought that might be silly to spend the time on that if I am just going to change the database scheme around. We shall see. Maybe these frameworks will make things a breeze to re-implement!
On the framework front, I'm currently using YUI! for a project here at work and it's pretty awesome. I think I will use it, possibly in conjunction with prototype, on the redesign. The sweet thing is that they don't conflict with each other. That means I can still use the dollar function when calling functions from the YUI objects!! Neat stuff!
Okay, that's my update, I must be off!
